5 Tips for a Preventing Workplace Injuries

Here are some tips to help prevent injuries in the workplace:

1.Prevent slips, trips, and falls: One of the leading causes of non-fatal work injuries are slips, trips,
and falls, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. All workplaces should be kept clean and in a sanitary condition, including passageways, storerooms, and service rooms. Additionally, floors should
always be kept clean and dry. If there are any spills or leaks, these should be reported and addressed immediately. All damaged, worn, or ripped flooring should be replaced and aisles and exits should be kept clear.

2.Eliminate fire hazards: The National Safety Council states that employees are responsible for keeping unnecessary combustible materials from accumulating in the work area and all combustible waste must be kept in covered metal receptacles and disposed of every day. Additionally, the following precautionary measures should be taken:

  • Only keep combustible materials in the work area when necessary for a job
    and only in amounts that are needed.
  • Keep all quick-burning and flammable materials away from ignition sources.
  • Keep all passageways and fire doors free of obstructions.
  • All hazards near electrical areas should be reported and fixed.

3.Control dust: The accumulation of dust can pose a significant explosion hazard. As such, employers should control dust, particularly in potentially hazardous areas. This will not only improve the safety of employees, but contribute to quality and length of life of equipment and products.

4.Prevent falling objects: To prevent falling objects, boxes and materials should be stacked straight up and down and heavier objects should be placed on lower shelves. Equipment should always be kept away from the edges of desks and tables.

5.Clear the clutter: Cluttered workplaces are a recipe for disaster. When an environment is cluttered, lacerations and cuts are more likely and it often makes it difficult for workers to comfortably move around.
