Talking on a Hands-Free Device – Is It Safe?

| Dec 1, 2017 | Car Accidents, Personal Injury

We all know that texting and driving is dangerous and incredibly distracting,
but many individuals are not aware that using a hands-free device is also
dangerous. You might have seen a driver with a Bluetooth earpiece, getting
chatty while stopped at a red light or stuck in traffic and, while it
might seem harmless to engage in something that does not require the use
of your hands, even the use of a hands-free device distracts your eyes
and mind from the task at hand. In fact, some research suggests that speaking
on the phone through the use of a hands-free device might even be more
dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to a study conducted by the University of Utah, more cell phone
users crash than drunk drivers and, additionally, no difference was found
between the performances of those who use hands-free or hand-held devices.
Other similar studies have yielded comparable results. For example, researchers
at Touro University found that the level of impairment between drunk drivers
and hands-free cell phone users to be almost equal.

How is it possible for the use of a hands-free device to be just as dangerous
as a hand-held device or driving under the influence of alcohol? Well,
studies have shown that the brain’s ability to process moving images
decreases by up to a third and, even when a driver is looking at the road
ahead, they tend to overlook at least half of their surroundings. Although
some have said that this act is on par with talking to a passenger, the
National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration disagrees. While both
are dangerous and distracting, passengers often watch the road and can
sometimes warn drivers about dangers they might overlook.

Ultimately, every driver is obligated to focus on one sole task whenever
behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Anything that distracts or divides
their attention from the road, their surroundings, or any other element
involved in driving will pose a risk the safety of others around them.
